MoMiLab is a research group of the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca (Italy)

Lab Mission

The MoMiLab integrates basic neuroscience methods with experimental psychophysiology, cognitive neuroscience and structural/functional brain imaging.

The MoMiLAB developed its own lines of research on the topics of perception and representation of the external world, and on the interaction with it.

In the thematic context of the ERC SH4 'The Human Mind and Its Complexity', the research areas of the MoMiLab include integrated and multidisciplinary aspects that focus on the study of mental activities and cognitive functions. In the specific context of IMT School, the lines of research of the neural correlates of the mind and human behavior has offered a new tool to focus attention on interdisciplinary questions (from economics to visual arts, from ethics to bioengineering,
from social sciences to forensic and legal sciences).

Our research protocols primarily enroll healthy individuals across different ages, but the MoMiLab also collaborates with clinical groups who are interested in neuropsychiatric disorders and neurorehabilitation. We also develop computational tools and resources for advanced data processing in brain imaging.

At the School, the MoMiLab coordinates the Cognitive, Computational and Social Neurosciences (CCSN) track of the Cognitive and Cultural Systems PhD program.

Two sound-proof cabins (Boxy and B-ear) are available at our Multidisciplinary Laboratory (@ IMT Lucca). Cabin 1 is equipped with systems for the recording of central and peripheral nervous system activity (EEG: 64-electrode Geodesic sensor net, EGI system; skin conductance; electrocardiogram; electrooculogram; electromyogram and respiratory activity). Cabin 2 is equipped with LiveTrack Lightning system to record eye movements and pupillometry (up to 500Hz sampling rate and 0.25° accuracy. Wearable devices (Empatica E4 Stress Bracelet, Tobii pro Glasses 2) are also available to conduct on-field experiments. We collect MRI data at partner institutions in Pisa (1.5 and 7 Tesla) and Massa (3 Tesla). The scanners are equipped with MR-compatible systems for the presentation of auditory and visual stimuli (VisuaStim).
